I came from Taiwan and people my age started learning English in 5th grade. However, I have the advantage of learning English even before the other kids because my older brother decided to teach us English one day after he learned it in school. So my sisters and I started from “This is a book” & “That is a pen,” armed with an English-Chinese dictionary. It was fun because we used to tease at each other for the strange sounds coming out of our mouth. As I grew up, many of my friends listened to a local American radio station, ICRT, which played a lot of popular American songs. We even had American teachers in college who would teach us some of the lyrics.
We’d love to hear your experience of when you first started learning English or any other languages, either here or in your country. Tell us what worked for you and what didn’t.
